U.S.-Indochina Educational Foundation Established

Non-Profit Organization to Support Education & Training in the U.S. for Selected Cambodian, Laotian, and Vietnamese Students

The U.S.-Indochina Educational Foundation, Inc. (USIEF) was established in January 2000 as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, non-governmental organization.

USIEF's mission is to contribute to the development of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam by offering some of its most promising students the opportunity to pursue advanced education and training in the U.S. The Foundation is also committed to educating Americans about conditions in a part of Southeast Asia whose recent past is closely linked to our own, as well as strengthening ties between this important region and the U.S.

There are currently few sources of financial support available for qualified students from these countries who wish to earn a degree or receive other training at an American institution of higher education. USIEF's goal is to meet this urgent need in a modest yet compelling way.

Specifically, USIEF will provide grants and other forms of assistance to qualified and deserving students from Indochina who wish to pursue graduate study in the United States. The Foundation will fund remedial English language and undergraduate training, if necessary.

Wherever and whenever possible, USIEF will solicit support, including in-kind contributions, from host institutions throughout the U.S. Aside from financial support, USIEF arranges for recruitment, selection, placement, orientation and mentoring of grantees. Consistent with the Foundation's mission, grantees are asked to fulfill a service requirement as a condition of support that includes visits to local schools, participation in on-campus events, and other meaningful and mutually beneficial activities.

The U.S.-Indochina Educational Foundation is based in Buffalo, N.Y. with representatives in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and Hanoi, Vietnam. Dr. Mark Ashwill, USIEF's executive director, is director of the World Languages Program and Fulbright Program Adviser at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. USIEF's activities are national and international in scope.  USIEF has a Board of Directors.

If you are interested in the Foundation's work and/or would like to make a tax-deductible donation, please contact USIEF at the address below. USIEF's web site was designed and is donated by Choice One OnLine, Inc., an Internet design service company with an office in Buffalo, New York.
