Ashwill and Diep have written a guidebook about
Vietnam, an often misunderstood country, and its people. Writing for
an audience of business professionals as well as general travelers,
they trace Vietnam's Soviet-style legacy as it merges into a
Western-style market economy. The authors discuss how the movement
towards supply/demand-driven economics propels business while
presenting challenges as well as opportunities for Western
companies. The book's eight chapters include an introduction and a
forward-looking epilogue. The middle six chapters cover an array of
topics including an overview of geography, demographics, politics,
economics, and business; Vietnam's rich 2000-year history; postwar
changes with a focus on workplace issues; cultural issues such as
relationship building (similar to the Chinese guanxi system);
practical tips for working with Vietnamese people; and the
critically important topic of how Vietnamese view Western people and
companies. With three short appendixes, references, and recommended
readings, this succinct guidebook is must reading for businesspeople
interested in the Vietnamese market; it is also recommended for
academics and tourists interested in Vietnam. Summing Up: Highly
recommended. Upper-division undergraduate through professional
collections. --- J. W. Leonard, Miami University © American Library
